Email marketing glossary
Bounce (hard)
A hard bounce is an unsolvable or permanent reason undeliverability, such as a non-existent subscriber address or blocked delivery by the server.
Bounce (soft)
A soft bounce renders an email undeliverable, and can occur for a number of reasons, but is a temporary problem.
CAN-SPAM
The CAN-SPAM Act of 2003 is a law that establishes the standards for sending commercial marketing messaging online. The CAN-SPAM acronym stands for “Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography And Marketing.”
Deliverability
Deliverability is the overall likelihood that mass marketing emails will reach inboxes based on a domain’s sending reputation and proper CPF and DKIM authentication.
Drip campaign
A drip campaign is an automated email marketing sequence consisting of a string of messages sent according to specifically timed intervals or conditional settings.
Landing page
The page a user arrives to after clicking a link within an email.
Open rate
The open rate is a percentage of recipients who opened an email compared to the total number of emails delivered.
Opt-in
When a subscriber opts in, or subscribes, they are specifically choosing to receive communications from a campaign or company.
Opt-out
When a subscriber opts out, or unsubscribes, they are specifically choosing to stop receiving marketing messages from a campaign or company.
Personalization
Personalization refers to the practice of adding elements to communications that are specific to the people receiving them, such as their name or company.
Plain text email
A plain text message contains no HTML formatting. It is useful for recipients using screen readers or email clients that do not support rich text formatting.
Rich text email
Emails in rich text format have adjustable text options, but are less complex than HTML.
Segmentation
Segmentation refers to a more specific targeting of marketing messages toward a specific “segment” of your overall list — such as their industry, engagement status, date subscribed, etc.
Transactional emails
This type of message is sent to users after specific actions are taken, in relation to the action taken. This could include notifications about password changes or receipts of purchase.
